The Market History
The State Street Farmers Market opened in 1999 with the support of the cities of Bristol TN., Bristol VA., Washington County VA and Sullivan County TN. The market actually goes back to the 1970's when farmers gathered in a downtown bank parking lot moving later to a local church parking lot. Some of the same farmers who participated then continue to participate in the organized market today. The market today sits within feet of the state line of Virginia and Tennesse at 810 State Street and celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2009.
About the Market
The market attracts a wide range of vendors from the region, from Mountain City, TN. to Mendota, VA. selling fresh fruits and vegetables, USDA inspected meats, fresh baked breads,cakes and pies; homemade crafts, honey and more. The market has on-site concessions and rest rooms.
Within one block of the market there are over 100 parking spaces. The market hosts a "Chef at the Market" program which features chefs from throughout the region offering recipes that feature market produce. Throughout the season music is performed on the market stage featuring bluegrass and country music. The market has produced a market cookbook, yearly collectable market posters, re-usable market totes,t-shirts, etc. The market sees customers from every demographic come through each week. The market participates in the TN. WIC program and VA. Senior Farmers Market Voucher program.
Finding the Market
I-81 South to Exit 3 merge onto I-381 South toward Bristol; continue to
Commonwealth Ave. turn left on State St.; market on right. I-81 North Exit 1 for US421 toward Bristol; keep right at fork, follow signs for Bristol and merge onto Gate City Hwy/US 421; slight left @ US 421 then slight left at W. State St.;slight left at Euclid Ave; turn right at Commonwealth Ave the turn left at State Street; market on right.
