The Market History
JCFM will be the second market in the state of TN to accept EBT/SNAP food stamps at a farmers market. This is made possible through a Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP) grant.
The Johnson County Farmers’ Market held their first community meeting on March 12, 2009. Growers and gardeners interested in selling hand grown and hand made goods locally, interested consumers, educators, business owners, and community organizers were in attendance. The Johnson County Farmers Market Board of Directors was established at this time. This group continued meeting weekly to get things ready for a successful market season. The first Johnson County Farmers Market (JCFM) was May 30, 2009. Ten to fifteen vendors regularly attend the market. JCFM has space for vendors for the 2012 season.
About the Market
Fresh local produce, handmade crafts, breads, jams and jellies are available. The market hosts mini festivals on the first Saturday of each month throughout the season. A stage is set at the market for those interested in playing music or providing other entertainment.
The Johnson County Farmers Market has been organized on a non-profit basis to:
Help Strengthen a Sustainable Local Agricultural and Food Economy
Provide education in sustainable agriculture and local food systems through workshops, tours, and events.
- Develop, promote, and protect a local just food system.
- Discover linkages between farmers/producers, processing facilities, and distribution channels in order to develop markets and make affordable quality foods more readily available to low-income residents.
- Build alliances with other regionally based organizations in order to increase capacity and market outlets for farm enterprises while providing quality food to low-income individuals and families.
- Develop agriculturally based enterprises.
- Provide volunteer opportunities to the public.
- Provide market outlets for farmers to promote their products directly to the consumer.
- Provide fresh high-quality local farm products to consumers at a reasonable price.
- Establish and maintain basic operating standards and representation for vendors.
- Provide the Farmers Market with publicity to promote the sale of Tennessee produce.
- Provide education and community enhancement.
